The data team at Substack is focused on delivering insights to our different business units. To accomplish this task, we build data infrastructure; we deeply scrutinize our data; we construct reports; and we measure everything. We are looking for an individual familiar with contemporary software development and processes and a well-stocked analyst's toolbox to join in helping us shape our data-driven culture. You will be an early leader in establishing key product metrics, enabling the company to learn from our data, answering key questions, and making better decisions.
Substack’s compensation package includes a market competitive salary, equity for all full time roles, and exceptional benefits. Our cash compensation salary range for this role is $140,000 - $200,000. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
Responsibilities
- Deeply understand the behaviors of Substack readers and writers
- Explore, measure, and track metrics related to the Substack ecosystem
- Derive denormalized tables to enable simplified analytics
- Partner with product teams on developing key metrics and testing intuitions with data to inform better decision making
- Develop data insights that can empower Substack writers to better understand their newsletters
Requirements
- 5+ years experience in product analytics
- Love analyzing problems with data and synthesizing results to tell the narrative of the product
- Have strong expertise in SQL (we use Postgres + Snowflake) and event-based analytics and metrics
- Understand growth funnels and how to measure them
- Enjoy building dashboards (Sisense/Periscope Data) to memorialize findings and monitor key metrics
- Believe that building canonical datasets can empower an organization
- Have a proven track record of making meaningful impacts through data insights and discovery in past roles
- Nice to haves: Airflow, Python, Node
